When I started this business over 30 years ago, there was one thing that was more important than any other for us to succeed: relationships. Over three decades those relationships have developed and today I am proud to announce that Acuity has found a unique offering in the investment management market. We see a major opportunity to source real assets in emerging market economies for global managers that need representatives on the ground across the Asia Pacific region.
Over the last few years we have been developing our networks across Asia and have forged strong relationships with a number of longstanding private companies and governments. These clients have given us a mandate of securing funding for property developments, oil and gas projects, roads and railways. Acuity has built a sizeable portfolio of multi-billion-dollar investment opportunities and continues to conduct due diligence on major assets across APAC.
This new direction for our business comes at a critical time for investment managers, who are increasingly looking to gain emerging market exposure as a means of diversification and growth.
However, a recent report by Willis Towers Watson warned that taking a single manager lens to emerging market debt has serious risks and may not be the most effective strategy.
The report highlighted that the emerging world is a large and growing part of the global economy that presents an excellent opportunity to asset owners. However, with less than 50 per cent of the universe achieving positive returns above benchmark even before fees are taken, the majority of investors have historically been disappointed by active investment approaches in emerging market debt.
Willis Towers Watson argues that this is due to the challenges of any single manager seeking to cover this broad asset class.
